Paw paw tree flower8/11/2023 ![]() They like growing near a concrete slab or concrete water tank. Because they don’t live forever, when the tree dies the roots do too. Hi Tash, Pawpaw roots are not that invasive or extensive at all. It could happen due to two reasons that I know of, roots lift the foundation, or the tree sucks so much water that the soil becomes dry, cracks, and sinks from the weight of your house. It’s not worth the risk to the foundation. These factors combine to make the trees very difficult to dig up without damaging the roots and killing the tree. Pawpaws have an unusually long taproot surrounded by smaller, brittle roots covered in delicate hairs. Pawpaw seed requires stratification for optimal germination and seed is sensitive to desiccation. Pawpaw seedlings develop a strong taproot with a fragile root system, which can be easily damaged upon digging therefore, most nurseries propagate trees in containers. Experimentation has shown that, to be successful, transplantation should be done in the spring at the time that new growth commences, or soon after. They have fleshy, brittle roots with very few fine hairs. Pawpaws are ordinarily quite difficult to transplant. For this reason we sell pawpaws while they are still quite small to ensure higher transplant success rates. It has a very deep root system and does not like its roots to be disturbed or broken. ![]() The paw paw can be a very difficult species to transplant.
